My Background
I began playing violin at 5 years old using the Suzuki method. We soon learned that that method wasn’t for me, and switched over to a private classical violin teacher. I learned quickly under her instruction, and was able to play in the Sarasota Youth Symphony starting in 4th grade. In high school, I was the concertmaster of my orchestra and was often called upon to teach the violin sections their parts. I would host lessons after school, and through this effort we were able to perform at Cadogan Hall in London. After high school, I was sure I wanted to be a teacher, so I went to school for Elementary Education, but didn’t end up loving the traditional classroom. I missed being surrounded by music and having the freedom to truly create my own curriculum. Now, I’ve been teaching violin for over 10 years and I believe having fun with music is the key to turning it into a lifelong passion.
Lesson Topics & Additional Info
A lot goes into playing the violin! It’s best to start with some music theory, making sure we can identify pitch and rhythm, before we pick up our instruments. But, one size doesn’t fit all. If you already have a violin or are just yearning to play, we can integrate the instrument right away. No need to go out and buy a violin, rentals are the ideal option for beginners, and I’m happy to help you find the right fit.
If you’re an adult who used to play, it’s easy to pick back up! You’ll be amazed at how much you remember and how much fun you have.
I love taking on all ages of students, from young children to adults. I have experience with students with disabilities and diverse backgrounds. Being queer myself, I understand the importance of an open and accepting space. I teach from my private and quiet home studio.
Lesson Rates
Intro lesson: $15 / 30 minutes
Get to know me and my teaching styles while I get to know you or your student! We will discuss what you want to get out of your lessons, your goals, and how we can achieve them. If you already have your violin, we will also play it. If not, we will discuss how to find a good rental violin.
Private lesson: $50 / 60 minutes or $30 / 30 minutes
A one-on-one lesson with me and you or your student. I typically focus on scales, arpeggios, etudes, and a fun piece of music that brings all the skills we’re learning together. But, I am happy to tailor the lesson to individual student needs and interests. I can create a custom lesson plan for you, you can tell me exactly what you want to learn and do, or we can do a mix of both. I want music to be fun, a creative outlet you keep and enjoy for the rest of your life.
